Ep 1: A Fisherman's Son

Eric Enno Tamm is an entrepreneur, award-winning author, journalist, and ocean advocate who was raised in the small coastal village of Ucluelet, BC. Descending from a long line of fisherman, Tamm grew up immersed in the commercial fishing industry on Vancouver Island, working in both the harvesting and processing sectors. An author of several reports on sustainable fisheries and ITQ systems, Tamm was head of communications for Ecotrust Canada and executive director of the Coastal Community Network, an advocacy group in British Columbia.

Tamm earned a master’s degree in journalism from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and a master’s degree in European affairs from Lund University in Sweden. His first book, Beyond the Outer Shores: The Untold Story of Ed Ricketts, the ​the Pioneering Ecologist Who Inspired John Steinbeck and Joseph Campbell, was named a Kiriyama Prize Notable Book. His second book, The Horse that Leaps Through Clouds: A Tale of Espionage, the Silk Road and the Rise of Modern China, won the Ottawa Book Award for Nonfiction in 2011. His writing has appeared in the Globe & Mail, Los Angeles Times Magazine, Wallpaper magazine, San Francisco Chronicle, and the Toronto Star, among others.

In 2010, Tamm co-founded the seafood traceability system ThisFish, where he serves as CEO. Since its launch, ThisFish Inc. was named one of BC’s top 10 start-ups by New Ventures BC, one of the top 15 foodtech start-ups by Rabobank’s Foodbytes competition, and one of the top agri-good startups by Ready To Rocket. In 2020, ThisFish also won the THRIVE Canada Challenge sponsored by SVG Ventures, beating out 90 other companies to be named the top Agtech start-up in Canada.
